Systematic Reviews in Health Research: Essential Elements

Abstract

Systematic reviews represent a secondary research design aimed at integrating evidence through explicit, reproducible procedures intended to minimize bias. Their consolidation emerged in response to the expansion of clinical and observational studies and the need to synthesize dispersed findings under uniform methodological criteria. They now constitute a central component of health research and evidence-based medicine. The validity and utility of a systematic review depend on the internal coherence of the process and on the quality of the primary evidence included. In the context of increasing scientific production, methodological rigor remains indispensable to preserve their value in clinical and policy decision-making. This article outlines the essential elements for their conduct: precise formulation of the research question, development and prospective registration of a protocol, design of a reproducible search strategy, independent study selection, standardized data extraction, structured risk-of-bias assessment, and synthesis consistent with the available heterogeneity. It also emphasizes adherence to international reporting standards, such as PRISMA, and to established methodological frameworks promoted by Cochrane.
